Notable for its unique, monstrous growth habit, this mescaline-containing cactus variety not only offers a captivating visual spectacle but is also relatively easy to care for. Its unusual appearance attracts immediate attention and can add a playful element to any interior. Whether in a prominent place in the living room or a surprising accent in an office, this plant is sure to create excitement.

Origin and characteristics

The Trichocereus Bridgesii Monstrose is a variety of the Trichocereus Bridgesii, a cactus species native to Bolivia. This 'monstrose' variety is characterised by its irregular and erratic growth, giving each plant its own unique shape and character. The plant can vary in height, with some specimens growing to impressive sizes. The green, fleshy, cylindrical stems are its most striking feature, sometimes branching or twisting in unexpected ways.

Cultivation and growth information

The Trichocereus Bridgesii Monstrose (also known as Penis Cactus or TBM) has specific water requirements due to its origins in dry, desert-like areas. Here are some guidelines for proper watering:

1. Seasonal Watering

  • Spring & Summer (growing season):

    • Water when the soil has completely dried out.
    • Usually this means once every 2-3 weeks, depending on temperature and humidity.
    • Use a 'soakand dry' method: pour water until it runs out of the drainage holes and let the soil dry out completely before watering again.
  • Autumn & Winter (dormancy period):

    • Reduce watering greatly or stop it altogether (at temperatures below 10°C).
    • Only water a little if the cactus starts to wrinkle.
    • Overwatering during this period can cause root rot.

2. How much watering?

  • Use rainwater or filtered water to avoid mineral build-up.
  • Make sure the water can drain well (do not leave standing water in the pot).
  • Use a cactus soil mix with plenty of drainage (e.g. sand, perlite and pumice).

3. Extra tips

  • Feel in the soil with your finger or use a moisture meter to check if the soil is completely dry before watering again.
  • Place the cactus in a place with sufficient sunlight and good air circulation, so that the soil dries out more quickly.
  • When in doubt: better to water too little than too much! Overwatering is the biggest cause of problems for this cactus.

If your environment is very humid, the cactus will need watering even less often. So always adjust the frequency based on temperature, humidity and the size of the plant.
