What is peyote?

Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is native to northern Mexico and southern Texas, particularly the Chihuahua Desert. The cactus forms flat, blue-green globules with tufts of soft, whitish hairs instead of spines, and flowers in shades of pink to white. The plant naturally contains mescaline. The name derives via Spanish from the Nahuatl word peyōtl. In the wild, peyote grows very slowly.

Care

Peyote requires little water. During the growing season, only water again once the potting compost has dried out completely. Ensure that excess water can drain away properly from the pot and do not leave the cactus standing in wet soil for long periods. In winter, peyote requires little to no water when kept in a cool spot.

Place the cactus in a bright spot and allow it to gradually acclimatise to direct sunlight. Preferably use well-draining cactus compost.
