San Pedro Cutting Pachanoi (Trichocereus) 35–45 cm is a cutting of the San Pedro cactus, Trichocereus pachanoi, measuring 35–45 cm in length. A cutting is a separate piece of cactus without a pot and can be rooted to continue growing as a cactus.

What is San Pedro?

San Pedro is a columnar cactus native to the Andes. It grows naturally in Ecuador and Peru, as well as in Bolivia, Colombia and Chile. In the wild, the cactus can grow to a height of several metres and forms green, ribbed stems. Mature specimens may produce large, white flowers that open at night. The cactus naturally contains mescaline. Botanically, the species is also known as Echinopsis pachanoi; in the Andes it is known as huachuma, amongst other names, and is cultivated worldwide as an ornamental plant.

Caring for the cutting

Place the cutting, with the base facing downwards, in dry, well-draining cactus compost. Do not water immediately; instead, allow the cutting time to develop roots first. Keep the compost mostly dry during this initial period to minimise the risk of rot.

Place the cutting in a light and warm spot, but allow it to gradually acclimatise to strong direct sunlight. Once the cutting is well-rooted, you can carefully start watering it. Afterwards, always allow the soil to dry out thoroughly before watering again.
