Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a succulent plant native to South Africa, also known as ‘kougoed’ in Afrikaans. In the more recent botanical classification, the plant is known as Mesembryanthemum tortuosum.
Kanna grows in dry, Karoo-like areas in the Cape Provinces of South Africa. The plant has pale flowers 2 to 3 centimetres wide and leaves with distinctive water cells; the stems become woody as the plant ages. Kanna has probably been known to the San and the Khoikhoi for thousands of years. The first known written account of the use of kanna is by Jan van Riebeeck, dating from 1662.
