What is passion flower?

Passiflora incarnata is a fast-growing perennial climbing plant native to the southeastern and central United States. Its roots survive underground during winter, after which the plant emerges again around May; this is one of the explanations for the English name maypop. The name passion flower refers to the Passion of Christ: Spanish missionaries saw elements of the final days of Jesus symbolised in the structure of the flower.
