Growing Lion's Mane: A Step-by-Step Guide

Cultivation instructions Lion's Mane grow kit

1. Remove the culture kit from the box. The mycelium of the Pruikzwam often needs a few days to recover from the trip. Fold the bag up again (SEE IMAGE 1 ABOVE).

2. Once you see little white balls forming on the substrate (mini Lion's Mane), it's time to make the slices. Make two cuts of about 5 cm in the block, preferably at the spots of the black lines in the picture above. Then fold the culture set closed again as you received it. You can use the elastic band provided for this purpose. Place the kit on a clean surface. By placing the kit on a damp cloth on a plate (SEE IMAGE 2 ABOVE) you increase the humidity in the immediate vicinity. Make sure the environment in which you place the grow kit is free of draughts.

3. The Lion's Mane needs high humidity and sufficient oxygen to grow well. Ideally, humidity should be around 70-80%, but our strain has been selected to grow well even at lower humidity levels. Keep the temperature between 18-24°C for optimal growth.

4. Harvest:

   The right time to harvest Lion's Mane is when the spores have not yet been released. This is usually when the 'moons', or tooth-like structures of the fungus, have reached their maximum length and before they begin to discolour or shrivel. The fungus then still has a bright white colour. You can carefully pull the Lion's Mane off the substrate. Try to leave as little residue as possible on the substrate. You can expect two harvests from this grow kit, the first being the largest. With some luck, there may be a small third harvest, but by then the grow kit will be almost completely exhausted. Between harvests, make sure you have enough humidity to encourage a second growth.

Storage advice

Store your fresh Lion's Mane in a paper bag in the fridge. They will stay good for about a week.
