HOW DO YOU MAKE AND USE SPACECAKE?

Last updated on: 10 February 2026

Spacecake is probably the best-known cannabis food for getting high. Whether you are an experienced user or trying edibles for the first time, a well-baked spacecake is a tasty and powerful experience. In this blog, we explain exactly what spacecake is, what to expect in terms of effects and how to make your own delicious (and responsible) spacecake step by step.

What exactly is spacecake?

Spacecake is a so-called cannabis edible - an edible product that contains THC (the active ingredient from cannabis). The term "space" refers to the psychoactive effects that occur after you eat it. Unlike smoking or vaping, the THC is absorbed through your digestive system. This makes for slower, more intense ánd longer-lasting effects. Usually, space cake is made with cannabis butter: butter into which cannabis has been dissolved. This butter is then incorporated into a standard cake batter. The strength depends on the quantity and quality of the cannabis used.

Effects & duration of a spacecake trip

As you eat spacecake, it often takes 45 to 90 minutes before you notice anything. The high or "trip" can then last for 3 to 6 hours, sometimes longer. This depends on:

  • your tolerance and body weight
  • the amount of THC
  • whether you are sober or satiated

Note: Always start with a small serving. The effects come on delayed, so don't eat more until you are sure how it feels.

Tips for responsible use:

  • Don't use alone the first time.
  • Provide a quiet environment and a sober trip-sitter.
  • Feeling overwhelmed? Stay calm, drink water or something sweet and rest for a while.

Overdosing with cannabis edibles is not life-threatening, but it can cause anxiety, confusion or panic.

The recipe: this is how to make space cake

Ingredients:

  • 8 grams of cannabis (or cutting waste of equal strength)
  • 225 grams of flour
  • 225 grams unsalted butter
  • 200 grams granulated sugar
  • 160 ml milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1.75 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: cocoa, vanilla, blueberries, icing, etc.

Equipment:

  • Oven and microwave
  • Mixing bowls
  • Cake pan
  • Baking paper or non-stick spray
  • Skewer or knife

Step 1: decarboxylating the cannabis

THC must be activated via heating, a process called decarboxylation. You do this before processing the cannabis:

  1. Preheat your oven to 110°C.
  2. Crumble the cannabis and spread it out on a baking tray.
  3. Bake for 30-40 minutes, scooping halfway through.

Step 2: Making cannabis butter

  1. Briefly melt the butter in the microwave (soft, not liquid).
  2. Stir the decarboxylated cannabis into the butter.
  3. Let the mixture infuse for 15-20 minutes on low heat or in the oven.

Step 3: make cake batter

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C.
  2. Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl.
  3. Add the milk, eggs and cannabis butter.
  4. Mix until a smooth batter forms. Too dry? Extra milk. Too wet? Extra flour.

Step 4: baking

  1. Grease the baking tin or line it with baking paper.
  2. Pour in the batter and smooth.
  3. Bake for 25-30 minutes in the centre of the oven.
  4. Check with a skewer: if it comes out clean, the cake is ready.
  5. Let the cake cool in the tin for 20 minutes, then place on a wire rack for 30 minutes.

Finally: dosage and safety

The strength of your space cake depends on the amount of THC in your weed. As a guideline:

  • Use 5-8 grams of medium strength for a cake of 10-12 servings.
  • Start with half a slice, wait 1.5 hours and evaluate.

Always important:

  • Inform people that there is THC in the cake.
  • Keep it out of reach of children or unwitting guests.
  • Do not combine with alcohol or other drugs.
