WHAT ARE THE BEST MANTRAS?

Last updated on: 10 February 2026

Mantras are ancient and have therefore been used for a very long time. They originated thousands of years ago in the Vedas of India and are still used today. Mantras are generally associated with spiritual growth and inner peace, but today they are also used for reducing stress and improving concentration. In this article, we name the best meditative spells, but first we explain what they are in the first place and whether they really work.

What is a mantra?

The word mantra comes from Sanskrit. Here, man stands for spirit, while 'tra' means an instrument or vehicle. So literally, mantra means an instrument for the mind. Mantra is usually a word or sound repeatedly meditated upon. Most people do this out loud, gently or just silently in the mind. In this way, they want to reduce distractions or increase their concentration. According to experts, these meditative sayings are over 3,000 years old and were originally created by the Vedas from the Indian tradition.

Does a mantra work?

You would think that mantras are barely researched by scientists, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, this topic is extremely researched and, as a result, we can say a thing or two about how functional the best mantras are. According to this 2022 study by Alvarez-Perez et al, meditating using mantras can help reduce anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress. Accordingly, the study saw a small to moderate improvement in participants' mental health. The same result came from this 2018 scientific study by Julie Lynch et al.

This 2017 study by Fatemeh Torkamani et al also suggests that mantra meditation in group sessions may have possible effects on salivary immunoglobulin A and mood in general. Moreover, mantras could help reduce knee pain and dysfunction in people with osteoarthritis, according to the study by Kim E. Innes et al. So all in all, the best mantras can definitely work, especially if you use them for stress reduction. Just know that the positive effects are modest though, keep this in mind. So don't expect a mantra to be a panacea.
