This sterilised mushroom grow substrate is professionally prepared and fully sterilised, providing a clean and controlled base for growing mushrooms. This substrate does not yet contain spores, liquid culture or mycelium and must be inoculated before colonisation can begin. This makes it especially suitable for growers who want to select their own genetics and control the entire cultivation process.

"Sterilised substrate is a nutrient-rich and sterile base for mushroom cultivation that must first be inoculated with spores or liquid culture before mycelium can grow."

At 24High, we believe it is important for growers to know exactly what they are using. This type of substrate offers maximum control over the growing process and is often chosen by experienced hobby growers who want to work with specific strains. Also check out our growing equipment category or read more about growing mushrooms with spores in our blog: What is a liquid culture syringe?

What is sterilised substrate?

Substrate is the nutrient medium on which mycelium grows. Professionally sterilising the substrate removes unwanted microorganisms, which significantly reduces the risk of contamination during the first phase of cultivation. As the product is delivered sterile, the grower can decide which genetics to use.

How does it work?

Upon receipt, the substrate must first be inoculated with spores or liquid culture. During this process, the substrate is injected with genetic material under sterile conditions. The mycelium then begins to spread through the nutrient-rich medium until complete colonisation is achieved.

Suitable inoculation methods include:

  • Spore syringes containing suspended spores
  • Liquid culture syringes containing active mycelium
  • Spore vials in sterile transfer

The method chosen may affect the speed and consistency of colonisation.

How to use sterilised substrate?

  1. Provide a clean and sterile working environment.
  2. Inoculate the substrate with a spore syringe, liquid culture or spore vial.
  3. Place the substrate in a suitable incubation environment.
  4. Wait until the mycelium has completely colonised the substrate.
  5. Then start the fruiting phase under controlled conditions.

It is important to note that sterile procedure is essential to avoid contamination during inoculation.

How many ml of spore inoculation:

  • Spore syringe: 5 ml for 1200 cc substrate, 10 ml for 2100 cc

  • Spore ampoule: half ampoule for 1200 cc, whole ampoule for 2100 cc

  • Liquid culture: 2 - 5 ml per litre per 1000 cc

  • Homemade liquid culture: first inject 2 ml of spores into the vial, wait 2 weeks, then use the full vial in the substrate.

What can you expect?

Sterilised substrate provides a clean starting point for mushroom cultivation and gives growers flexibility in choosing genetics. Colonisation time can vary depending on temperature, hygiene and the species chosen. Many growers especially appreciate the control this type of substrate offers compared to fully colonised culture kits.

Who is this suitable for?

This product is often chosen by growers who:

  • want to select genetics themselves
  • are experienced in working sterile
  • want more control over the entire cultivation process
  • want to experiment with different strains

For beginners, a ready-made grow kit can sometimes be more accessible, while sterilised substrate offers more flexibility for advanced users.

Important information

  • The substrate is sterilised but not yet colonised
  • The product does not produce mushrooms without inoculation
  • Sterile procedure is necessary during use
  • Colonisation rate depends on genetics and conditions

Why choose sterilised substrate?

  • Professionally sterilised
  • Free of contamination upon delivery
  • Suitable for psilocybe cubensis and other species
  • Compatible with multiple inoculation techniques
  • Full control over strain selection
