The Azurescens Outdoor Grow Kit is a cultivation kit for growing Psilocybe azurescens outdoors. This species grows on a woody substrate and is known for its potent effects and seasonal fruiting. Unlike many indoor grow kits, this kit is set up outdoors, where the mycelium can continue to develop and, under suitable conditions, produce mushrooms annually.
The Azurescens Outdoor Grow Kit contains 280 ml of substrate with active Psilocybe azurescens mycelium and is intended for outdoor cultivation on, amongst other things, damp wood chips.
At 24High, we believe clear explanations are important, especially for an outdoor grow kit that works differently from a standard indoor grow kit. That’s why we’ve set out below a step-by-step guide to what you’ll need, the best time to start and what to expect during the growing process.
The Azurescens Outdoor Grow Kit contains active mycelium of Psilocybe azurescens. This mushroom species thrives on woody material, such as small beech wood chips, and is suitable for outdoor cultivation in a sheltered and shady environment.
What makes this grow kit special is that you do not use a traditional indoor fruiting chamber. You set up a suitable growing spot outdoors where the mycelium can spread. Under favourable conditions, the same spot can produce magic mushrooms again in subsequent seasons.
Outdoor cultivation follows a different rhythm to a standard indoor grow kit. In our guide to the cultivation process for home growers, you can read more about the development of mycelium and the various growth stages.
This grow kit is particularly suitable for growers who have outdoor space available and would prefer to set up a permanent growing site rather than repeatedly starting a new indoor grow kit.
Azurescens grows on a woody substrate and, provided the mycelium establishes itself properly, can thrive in the same spot for a long time. Fruiting mainly takes place when outdoor temperatures drop sufficiently in the autumn.
Setting up the outdoor growing area is not technically extremely complicated, but it does require more preparation than a standard, fully colonised indoor grow kit. You need to prepare the wood chips yourself, allow the mycelium to grow through them, and then choose a suitable spot outdoors.
Furthermore, the resulting Azurescens magic mushrooms are known for their potent effects. That is why this strain is mainly chosen by users who already have experience with psychedelics.
Psilocybe azurescens is considered a potent species of magic mushroom. The effects experienced vary depending on the individual, dosage, mental state and environment.
As the experience can be intense, caution is important. A calm environment, appropriate dosage and thorough preparation play a major role in how the experience is perceived.
Azurescens is a potent outdoor mushroom species that grows on a woody substrate and primarily produces fruiting bodies during the cooler months.
As Azurescens can be potent, a cautious dosage is important. Based on the guidelines provided:
Always start cautiously if you have little experience with this strain and use an accurate set of scales. Bear in mind that individual sensitivity can vary greatly.
The best time to set up the grow kit outdoors depends on the climate. In Northern Europe, people usually start in the spring, roughly from late March to June. In Southern European regions, set-up can take place later in the year, for example from September through to December.
The aim is to give the mycelium sufficient time to colonise the woody substrate before the cold autumn and winter months set in.
As well as the grow kit, you’ll need a few materials to set up a suitable outdoor growing area. These are not included as standard.
Fill a plastic container of about 1 litre about two-thirds full with small wood chips. Add boiling water so that the wood chips are completely submerged.
Leave the wood chips to soak for about 12 hours or overnight. Then drain off all the excess water.
Wash your hands thoroughly. Open the grow kit and carefully loosen the mycelium using a clean fork or similar utensil.
Add the contents of the grow kit to the damp wood chips and distribute the mycelium as evenly as possible throughout the material.
Place a layer of damp brown cardboard over the mixture. Place the lid loosely on the container so that dust is kept out, but air circulation is still possible.
Leave the container at room temperature in a clean environment for about one month. When the wood chips have largely turned white due to the mycelium, the material is ready for outdoor use.
Place the remaining wood chips in a large bucket or pan and pour boiling water over them.
Leave these wood chips to soak overnight as well, then drain the water completely.
Fill the cardboard box with both the colonised wood shavings and the newly prepared damp wood shavings.
Mix the material gently and evenly using a clean fork or similar tool.
Bury the open cardboard box in a shady spot, for example under a shrub or tree. If you wish, you can add a thin layer of damp soil, about 1 cm deep, and scatter grass seed over the top.
When growing outdoors, location, growing medium and patience are key elements of the process. In our guide to mistakes and lessons learnt when growing your own, you can read about the points to bear in mind whilst growing.
Azurescens works differently to a standard indoor grow kit. After setting up, the mycelium must first spread further through the woody material. Fruiting only begins once outdoor temperatures have dropped sufficiently.
According to the cultivation information provided, the mushrooms usually appear from autumn onwards, often around October or November, with the season potentially extending into December or January. The exact timing depends on the climate, temperature and how well the mycelium has established itself.
Outdoor growth cannot be planned precisely and may vary from season to season. Our guide to support and guidance for home cultivation will help you monitor the development of the mycelium more effectively.
Above all, choose a shady and damp spot where the mycelium won’t constantly dry out. A spot under bushes or trees may be suitable for this.
Patience is also key. Outdoor mycelium follows the natural seasons and cannot be controlled in the same way as an indoor grow kit. The first year is therefore mainly about ensuring good colonisation of the woody substrate.

Check the mushrooms regularly during the fruiting period. A common indicator that it’s time to harvest is when the membrane under the cap starts to loosen.
Gently grasp the stem, slowly twist the mushroom left and right, and carefully pull it upwards. Work as cleanly as possible and avoid unnecessarily damaging the surrounding mycelium.
Once the mycelium has become well established in the outdoor bed, multiple growth cycles may occur during a suitable season. The product information provided assumes approximately two to three harvests per year under favourable conditions.
A well-established wood bed can produce fruiting bodies again in subsequent years, provided the mycelium retains sufficient suitable substrate and appropriate conditions.
Wood chips, cardboard, soil and other materials for the outdoor bed are not included.
This grow kit is particularly suitable for growers with a suitable outdoor space who are prepared to allow the mycelium to develop over a longer period. It is a different method of cultivation to that used with standard indoor grow kits and requires more planning in terms of season, location and substrate.
Due to the potent nature of the resulting Azurescens magic mushrooms, this strain is primarily intended for experienced users.
Would you prefer to grow indoors, or are you looking for a simpler growing process? In that case, a fully colonised Psilocybe cubensis grow kit may be a more accessible alternative.
Which grow kit is best suited to you depends mainly on the growing space available, your experience and whether you want to grow indoors or outdoors.
Azurescens is known as a potent psychedelic mushroom strain. Only use magic mushrooms if you are an adult and well-informed. Do not combine them with alcohol or other drugs, and do not operate vehicles or machinery whilst the effects are still present.
Psychedelics are not recommended for people with a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia or other serious psychiatric conditions. Are you taking medication, or are you pregnant or breastfeeding? If so, please consult a doctor before using psychedelic products.
