The Jack Frost grow bag contains a nutrient-rich substrate that is already fully colonised with healthy mycelium. This means you no longer need to add spores, liquid culture or other genetics. Once the right conditions are created, the mycelium can begin forming fruiting bodies.
What sets Jack Frost apart from many other cubensis strains is its distinctive appearance. The mushrooms often develop light to almost white stems and caps, resulting in a striking display during cultivation.
Jack Frost is usually chosen by growers who already have experience in mushroom cultivation. Due to its sensitivity to changes in temperature, humidity and air circulation, this strain requires more attention than many beginner-friendly varieties.
Jack Frost has a growth pattern that differs from many standard Psilocybe cubensis varieties. Development is generally slower and more controlled, meaning patience plays an important role during the cultivation process.
As this strain is less forgiving than, for example, Golden Teacher or B+, a stable climate is strongly recommended.
As the substrate is already fully colonised, you can start the fruiting phase straight away. Ensure a clean working environment and keep the recommended growing conditions as stable as possible.
Below the air filter on the grow bag, there is a small slit made by the manufacturer. This opening allows excess CO₂ and pressure to escape if the grow bag becomes inflated during the growing process. This is normal and is not damage. You do not need to do anything, and the opening should not be sealed or taped.

If natural daylight is insufficient, a grow light can be a solution. A heating mat can also help if a constant temperature is difficult to maintain.
Jack Frost is not known as the fastest strain. Fruit formation may take longer than with other popular varieties. Many growers actually appreciate this slower development because it clearly highlights the strain’s unique characteristics.
Under stable conditions, the grow bag can usually produce multiple flushes. On average, between two and four harvests are achieved, depending on care and environmental factors.
Because every grow can develop differently, it helps to assess any irregularities calmly. Read more about mistakes, uncertainty and learning experiences when growing your own.

Prepare the grow bag by lightly misting the inside with water and then close the bag with a paperclip. Keep the bag closed again during the rest of the growing process.
Clean working practices are essential when growing mushrooms. Contamination can occur due to bacteria, fungi or other microorganisms that come into contact with the substrate during the process.
Working hygienically, continuing to monitor development and responding to abnormalities in time are all part of responsible growing. Read more in our guide to growing your own and in-depth information.
