Agar Agar powder - 100 grams is a widely used nutrient medium within mushroom cultivation and mycology. Once dissolved and cooled, it forms a firm gel on which mycelium can develop in a controlled manner. This makes Agar Agar particularly suitable for growing, observing and cloning mushrooms on petri dishes.

Agar Agar is a plant-based gel that provides a stable and orderly basis for working with live mycelium cultures.

What is Agar Agar?

Agar Agar is a natural substance extracted from red algae. In mycology, it is used as a base for culture media because it creates a clean and solid substrate. By adding additional nutrients, such as malt or yeast extract, the medium can be tailored to different culture purposes.

Besides its application in mushroom cultivation, Agar Agar is also known as a plant-based alternative to gelatine. Its sturdy structure and heat resistance make it very suitable for sterile work.

How does Agar Agar work in mushroom cultivation?

After heating and cooling, Agar Agar turns into a solid, transparent gel. On this gel, mycelium can visibly expand, allowing you to closely monitor growth, contaminations and structure. This is especially useful for:

  • Cloning mushrooms
  • Testing spores or liquid cultures
  • Selecting strong mycelium
  • Research and controlled culture

Use and preparation

Agar Agar is usually dissolved in water and boiled briefly to create a sterile medium.

  • Use about 15-20 grams of Agar Agar per litre of water
  • Bring the mixture to the boil
  • Add malt or yeast extract if required
  • Pour the hot liquid into sterile petri dishes or jars
  • Allow to cool to a solid gel

After cooling, the medium is ready for inoculation with spores or mycelium.
